SDC Guidelines on Disaster Risk Reduction 2008 Author: SDC The SDC Guidelines on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) deal with the management of disaster risks emanating from natural hazards. In particular, they focus on risks from (a) sudden onset disasters like earthquakes or hurricanes; (b) slow onset disasters like desertification, climate change or deforestation; and (c) naturally induced technical disasters like a fire in an oil refinery caused by an earthquake. The Guidelines are SDC’s response to the commitments made by the international community at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction in 2005.

Global Survey of Early Warning Systems 2006 Author: UN/ISDR (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction) This survey was undertaken with a view to advancing the development of a global early warning system for all natural hazards. The survey report concludes that while some warning systems are well advanced, there are numerous gaps and shortcomings, especially in developing countries. The report recommends the development of a globally comprehensive early warning system. It also recommends a set of specific actions toward building national people-centred early warning systems, strengthening the scientific foundations for early warning, and developing the institutional foundations for a global early warning system.

Comprehensive Risk Assessment for Natural Hazards 2006 Author: WMO (World Meteorological Organization), Reprinted 2006 (Report has to be ordered) The emphasis of this report is on identifying and presenting various technologies used to assess the risks of natural disasters and to encourage their application to particular circumstances around the world.
