Disaster Risk Reduction in the Project Cycle Management (PCM-Tool)
2007
Author: SDC Many projects are carried out in areas endangered by natural hazards such as floods, landslides, droughts, earthquakes or soil degradation. Therefore, an appropriate risk management should be integrated into every stage of the project cycle. Taking natural hazards into account will increase the resilience of a project in case of a disastrous event and ensure that project activities do not increase the risk of natural disasters.
The PCM tool contains flowcharts for decision-making for every project phase, key questions, tasks and links for further reading for every project phase, a glossary with main terms and examples, a checklist for the identification of the DRR potential and two checklists for a Quick Risk Appraisal
The PCM tool is a tool for programme officers and project managers dealing with spatially relevant projects.

Neighbourhood Disaster Volunteers (NDV) - Part I
2007
Author: SDCNCD Resource Package; Strengthening civil society for disaster preparedness and response In the aftermath of Turkey’s devastating 1999 earthquakes it was apparent that something needed to be done to reduce the people’s lack of preparedness and sense of abandonment. The simple idea behind the Neighbourhood Disaster Volunteer (NDV) approach is that, by joining together in neighbourhood-based groups and acquiring appropriate skills, organization and equipment, people can be empowered to build local preparedness and respond adequately when disaster strikes.
This Resource Package is structured into three Parts:
* Part 1, Decision-maker’s Guide, introduces the justification for NDV, describes how they function and identifies the main aspects and issues to be considered when preparing a project to establish and support an NDV network.
* Part 2, Program Manager’s Workbook, explains the essential components of an NDV support project with detailed step-by-step description of activities and procedures to be followed, check-lists of aspects to be considered.
* Part 3, Implementer’s Tools, contains tested tools and sample documents that may be adapted and used by the implementers for efficient and orderly implementation of the project; it is available in CD format only.
The package is addressed to decision-makers in governments, civil societies and development agencies involved in disaster management, as well as to project managers, community activists, field officers and staff who assume responsibility for building or supporting community-based disaster response capacities.
